My name is Mmekid Courage. I live and work in Ikorodu, Lagos, where I run BlueWhale Sports Academy — a women's football academy I founded to develop the next generation of players in Nigeria.
Why Lagos & The Football Journey
People ask me why Lagos.
The truth is, Lagos was never just a location to me.
Lagos was where I came chasing one football dream.
Like many people who leave home with ambition in their hearts, I believed football would be the thing that changed everything for me and my family.
But unlike many people assume, football was never a hobby for me.
Football was the plan.
And if I am being honest, I was never the most talented player in the room.
I wasn't the naturally gifted player everyone expected to make it.
I didn't come into football because I believed I was destined to become a superstar.
I came because I wanted to make a difference.
I wanted to create a different future for myself and for my family.
To keep that dream alive, I got involved in different online businesses while still pursuing football.
I learned how to sell.
I learned how to market.
I learned how to build.
Some things worked.
Some things didn't.
I made money.
I lost money.
But every business I built, every skill I learned and every sacrifice I made had one purpose:
Keeping the football dream alive.
Lagos became part of that journey.
The coaches and managers around me taught me football.
They shaped how I saw the game.
They shaped how I understood discipline, systems, leadership and development.
Football was never something I pursued out of passion alone.
For me, it was purpose.
My plan was simple.
Play professionally.
Play in China.
Spend a few years in the game.
Retire early.
Then focus fully on business and building.
Life changed the script.
But football never left me.
My relationship with football simply evolved.
Years later, when it was time to build, there was nowhere else I could have started.
Because the girls are already here.
The talent is already here.
The dreams are already here.
What they need is a place built with structure.
A place with intentionality.
A place that believes in their future enough to build for it.
That is why BlueWhale is in Lagos.
Not because it is convenient.
Because this is home.
Today, I no longer chase the dream for myself alone.
I chase it through every player who walks through BlueWhale.
BlueWhale is simply me playing football through every player.
Every girl who steps onto that pitch carries an opportunity I wish existed in greater numbers when I was coming up.
Every player represents a dream I once carried myself.
That is why this work means so much to me.
This is no longer passion.
This is purpose.
Why BlueWhale exists
Every institution that lasts starts as one person's stubborn conviction that something should exist. BlueWhale is mine. The academy is the answer to the question I kept asking — where do young women in Nigeria go to become footballers?
Why I document
I write and film because the work should be legible. Not to prove anything, and not to perform. Because a founder who explains her thinking makes it easier for the next founder to build something better. And because a hundred years from now, someone should be able to read exactly how this started.
